If you know me, you know that I love a good t-shirt. Tees have long been a wardrobe staple for me, and only recently I’m branching out into colors other than basic black or white. I’m also looking at adding different necklines (you know, not just crew or basic V) to my wardrobe, so when I saw this American Apparel Unisex Tri-Blend Deep V-Neck tee, I knew it was something I had to have.
As always, choosing a color was hard.
Big surprise that I couldn’t make up my mind… but in the end I settled on Tri-Lemon. While I was weighing my options, I decided that if a 3-pack existed that were Tri-Lemon, Tri-Cranberry, and Tri-Indigo, it would be perfect. Alas, that doesn’t exist, but there’s a 3-pack of tees that are close here and a 3-pack of tanks that are close here. I think if I ordered again I’d get the 3-pack of tees to round out my color collection. Anyway, moving on…
I easily chose a size for this tee. I went with a small, because it was a unisex top. If it had been a women’s fit, I likely would have gone with a medium or even a large, but I figured a unisex small would fit how I wanted it to–slightly bigger, but not crazy oversized. Plus, I was worried that if I went too big, I’d have to wear something underneath it for fear of showing off my
Initially, when I got it, I thought it was going to be hard to style because of the color. It was a little more greeny-yellow than the picture made it seem (I thought it was going to be a mintier green kind of color) and I didn’t think I’d have much that would go with it. Oh, and the fit? Just how I thought it would be, and the V wasn’t too low either, which was great (and worksafe).
In terms of styling it, my worries were totally silly. I actually wore this twice before I remembered I had to take pics for this review, and have worn it numerous times since. It goes with a ton in my closet, and adds nice texture to an outfit too, which you know I love.
When I got around to taking pics, I had worn it on a casual weekend day. It was a little chilly, so I topped it with my swapped GAP cardigan and wore my patched up GAP jeans. To tie the grey in, I wore my grey Chucks, and I added 3 necklaces: my long claw, my feather necklace from Forever21, and my heart locket from Target.
This was such an easy, comfortable outfit. Perfect for a spring weekend day full of running errands. The Unisex Tri-Blend Short Sleeve Deep V-Neck top is one of the softest I own, including all of my well-worn tees, and it fits me, as I mentioned, just how I wanted. It’s perfect for the half-tuck! And because it’s not just a plain white tee, it’s a little easier to dress up more than an average t-shirt.
Wait, what exactly is “tri-blend”?
The tri-blend is polyester, cotton, and rayon. At first, when I was looking at the colors, I thought it referred to the colors, because each one looks like it could be a blend of three different colors. But, according to the American Apparel website, it’s a 50% polyester blend with 25% cotton and 25% rayon. The site says, “Polyester retains shape and elasticity; Cotton lends both comfort and durability; addition of Rayon makes for a unique texture and drapes against the body for a slimming look” and I have to agree.
I’ve washed this top 4 or 5 times now, and it’s not fading, it isn’t losing it’s shape (not even after being hung on a hanger), and it’s soft. I love the way it hangs on me, and it’s not the type of fabric that doesn’t breathe makes you feel itchy. While I know some people don’t like buying polyester or poly-blend items, you don’t have to worry about this tee feeling like polyester. In fact, it’s just as soft as my well-worn Hanes tees, and was definitely softer than them right out of the box. Because of the blend, there’s no need to wash this tee a few times to “break it in”.
If you’re on the hunt for a not-so-basic tee, consider the Unisex Tri-Blend Short Sleeve Deep V-Neck.
It’s soft, easy to wear, and comes in tons of great colors that will have you leaving your basic white and black tees behind. If the deep V isn’t for you, there are tons of other women’s t-shirts, tank tops, leggings, and even hoodies and cardigans. American Apparel has some great men’s tri-blend items as well. At $24 for one super-soft, made in the USA t-shirt, it’s a pretty good deal too.
