If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ve probably seen my Dup-A-Look board. It has over 350 outfit ideas, which were specifically pinned with duplicating them in mind. I’ve already duped 10 of them, which I’ve moved to a recently-created “Duped Looks” board.
Ages ago, I was looking at some outfits I’d pinned and thought “wow, I could duplicate that look almost exactly, I have everything to make it work”. And then a little light bulb went off in my head and I said to myself, “hey wait a minute, why shouldn’t I duplicate that look?”. Dup-a-Look was born. Now, I know that it’s not really a new concept, as many other style bloggers do similar things. J’s Everyday Fashion is probably the most notable one, and one of my favorites, followed closely by Two Birds’ Inspiration Monday, but there are tons of others. This is just my spin on it.
I set very few rules for myself, with no time constraints, specific dates, or anything of that nature to follow. The strictest rule I set for myself was to not go out and buy new clothes to dupe specific looks; Dup-A-Look was strictly a “shop my closet” kind of thing. Sure, I set certain rules for posting each dupe I did (always put both looks side-by-side, try to pose similarly, and always credit the original source when possible), but other than that, it was a pretty laid-back thing. Because of that, I duped looks very rarely. Like I mentioned above, I’ve only done 10 Dup-A-Look posts to date, which is less than one a month.
I decided I needed to step it up.
10 dupes in over a year simply wasn’t enough for me. I thought about it and realized that the reason I wasn’t doing dupes, even though I always had fun with it (even if I didn’t like the outcome), was because it was just easier to throw something together in the morning instead of planning ahead. Lame. It’s really not that hard to plan ahead, and doing so leaves me more time in the morning to
sleep get ready.
I decided it wouldn’t be all that fun if I just said, “ok, I’ve gotta do one Dup-A-Look post a month” or something like that. Nah, that’s boring! Besides, I have over 350 outfit ideas, and pin new ones nearly every day… I’d be making very little progress (unless I stopped pinning, but who are we kidding, that’s never happening).
Enter the Dup-A-Look Challenge!
I decided it would be far more fun (and make a bigger dent in my looks to be duped) if I did a full week of Dup-A-Look looks. It would mean some significant planning ahead (even to the point of trying stuff on in advance), but I am ok with that for a week. In fact, I imagine it’ll make my life a whole lot easier if I have a week’s worth of outfits planned out at the start of the week. I mean, imagine how much time I’ll save in the morning if I don’t have to rummage through my closet, figure out what works together, pick shoes, decided on accessories… you get the idea. Tons, I imagine!
And that alone is enough to make me want to take this challenge.
So I’m doing it: 7 dupes in 1 week.
Starting Sunday, September 23, I’m going to be duping 7 looks from my Dup-A-Look board. That gives me a mere 2 days to choose looks, make sure I have everything I need, do any laundry I need to do, get outfits together, and GO! Granted I suppose I don’t have to plan everything out Saturday night, but next week is going to be hectic, and I know it’ll be easier that way. Next week also has 2 wrenches thrown in it, because I need to dress nicer than I do for work 2 days next week. That’s going to definitely make things a little more challenging. But I do have 2 weekend days where I can dupe some of the looks that aren’t work-friendly.
So, stay tuned for what’s, no doubt, going to be a fun challenge! I’ll be posting some looks I want to dupe first over on Facebook, so head over there and let me know what you think!
