Jena Garcia’s burning desire to become a haute couture designer, creating amazing couture was, in fact, a result of burning. Literally burning her flesh! When she was 6 years old, Jena climbed up on the stove to get the Alpha Bits cereal out of the upper cupboard for her little sisters and herself. The pilot light caught her nightgown and she went up in flames! Panicking, Jena ran upstairs to her parents room, burning her body all the way. On the way to the emergency room, she noticed black ashes all over her legs, and said, “Daddy, am I going to die?”
Six months in the hospital and 13 surgeries later, Jena had to re-learn to walk. The wounds were so deep that she was bedridden.
Leaving her lower body horribly scarred and disfigured, those flames completely changed Jena’s life forever! No more normal, carefree childhood for her… she worried about how people would react to her scars. The scars on her flesh tried to scar her heart forever. But what a blessing that her parents provided such a rich and culturally saturated life for her and her four younger sisters and baby brother! As the oldest of six children, Jena had plenty of chores to do, and good grades to get, music and sewing lessons, religious activities, and ohhhhh… the traveling adventures her family had! Touring the continent, museums, art, hiking, camping, exploring! Jena says, “I wish all kids could have the concentrated education and training that we had!”
Jena began sewing at 9 years of age and developed a hunger for Vogue Designer patterns. Always “embellishing” them her own way, Jena started out as her own little haute couture designer. It has been a driving and burning passion of hers to create the most beautiful clothes ever, with a part of her trying to compensate for the shame of being disfigured. Jena thought, “If people notice my pretty outfit, then they won’t mind the scars on my legs.”
