Outfit Planning

This was originally a Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday topic, but I wasn’t able to write on it because Suburban Style Challenge was down because of some technical issues.  It really bugged me, because these questions were actually ones that I had suggested to Katy Rose, and I’d been looking forward to writing about them.  Since I missed it, I figured I’d take this opportunity to write on it now for you.

How do you go about picking your outfit for the day? Do you lay stuff out the night before? Do you plan a whole week’s worth of looks Sunday night? Do you wing it every morning?
I’d say 75% of the time, I end up winging it in the morning.  I don’t think I’ve ever planned a whole week’s worth of looks in advance, spare maybe when packing for a vacation.  I do plan ahead for special events or days that are a little more important than an average day, but more often than not, I wing it the night before.

When I do plan, I have and over the door hook I use to hang everything on, and I lay my shoes out in the hallway, so it’s all easy to grab from the bathroom and I’m not distracted by other articles of clothing, accessories, shoes, etc.  It makes everything “grab and go”, and often gives me another 10 minutes to relax before I start my day (I’m very much not a morning person).

Here are a few outfits I threw together quick to show you just what my system looks like.

Every time I do this I’m really glad I got the over the door hook.  It really makes things so much easier in the morning!

Do you try stuff on and then take pics to see how it looks, like Cher in Clueless?
I have, for special events before, and for photo shoots (though for shoots it’s largely for reference).  But mostly, no, I don’t.  I do sometimes try out new combinations of certain pieces the night before to make sure they work together, are work-friendly, are flattering, or otherwise fit what I’m looking for for that event’s or day’s outfit.

That said, those outfits above?  I’ve saved 3 of them on the hangers just as they are above to wear sometime in the near future.  A fourth one I put back, but also plan on wearing sometime soon.  So I suppose I have photo references of them as well.

And are you consistent in your planning or lack thereof, or is your planning limited to special events?
I’ve tried to be consistent and plan every day, but things happen–I get tired the night before (or sucked into a movie or TV show until late), outfits don’t work out as planned, the weather changes–and my plans to plan go awry.  Then I end up just wining it for a few days.

So I guess I’m more consistent in my lack of planning than I am in my planning.

Do you have a way of keeping track of which outfits you wore when?
Aside from Random Outfit posts, and maybe photos from events, no.  But I don’t particularly care all that much, when it comes to re-wearing things.

How do you come up with new clothing combinations? An app? Computer program? Trial and error?
Occasionally I play around on Polyvore, but largely, it’s trial and error.  In fact, even with Polyvore it’s trial and error, because things may look great together in theory, but may not actually work once they’re on.  I’ve tried a few online programs and apps for my iPhone 4, but don’t really have the desire to photograph every article of clothing I own in order to create the catalog.

I do spend quite a bit of time on Pinterest, and often save images from there directly on my phone so I can reference them later, while putting things together (or I’ll have Pinterest open while I’m planning).  It helps quite a bit.

What about you, readers?
How do you plan what you wear?  Do you at all, or do you just wing it every morning?  Let me know in the comments!
