Patricia Shultz’s bestselling book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die has recently been re-released in the form of a full-color second edition. The book, which has spawned a number of knock-offs, is so much more than just a simple travel guide. Each entry tells you why the place should be visited, or course, but also gives you a ton of important info about each place, such as websites, phone numbers, and the best time to visit. Patricia even gives you a list of places to stay, things to see, and restaurants to try while you’re there, which is great–it means each of the 1,000 places isn’t so much of a place as it is a full travel experience! 1,000 Places to See Before You Die covers everything from the Great Mosque in Mali to the Denali National Park in Alaska, and much, much more! In fact, the second edition has 28 new countries and 200 more pages than the first edition.
1,000 Places to See Before You Die is one impressive book! In fact, when I first got my copy, I thought the package contained 4 books, not just one! Once I opened the package and saw how big of a book it was, I couldn’t resist pawing through it quickly. There’s a ton of information inside, along with beautiful photos of some of the places. It’s sorted by country, and has a nice index at the back so you can easily find what you’re looking for if you have a specific destination in mind. Here’s pics of the 3 places I looked for right away (and found, yay!).
Once I sat down and had some more time to read the book, I found myself starting out with areas I was familiar with or had been to, to see if I could check anything off my list. Boy was I excited to see that I could, in fact, check some places off! The Grand Canyon, where hubs and I took a vacation last year, is there of course, and since we’re planning on going back, I moved on. I was excited to see Mama’s Fish House in Maui listed as one of the places you must eat at while you’re there. We went there on our honeymoon. I was a bit disappointed that some of the other restaurants we tried weren’t on the list, but amused that the hotel our airline put us in when our flight was canceled was on there. Otherwise, much of what we did while we were in Maui was on the list, which was good–who knows when we’ll get a chance go to back!
Left: Hubs and I looking snazzy outside Mama’s Fish House in Maui after dinner. After going there, I totally understand why Mama’s is on the list! Right: Me with an elk toy we bought for Giveaway Dog at the Grand Canyon… another place I completely agree with being on this list, and look forward to going back to (definitely with help from the book!).
I can’t lie, I really wish that I had had 1,000 Places to See Before You Die before heading to Maui for our honeymoon. But at the same time, there are tons of other places I’d love to go see too, even here in the US. Now that I have this book, it’ll make planning some trips much easier! New Orleans has been on my list for awhile, and this video just makes me want to go there more! The video really gives you a good taste of what’s in the book too…
1,000 Places to See Before You Die is going to be my pre-trip reference and my during-trip guide! Hubs and I don’t want to miss out on seeing something great, that’s for sure. Speaking of hubs, when he saw the book sitting on our kitchen counter, he snagged it and has now completely hijacked it from me! He flipped through it like I did first, but has since then started picking and choosing different destinations to check out. We were oohing and ahhing over some of the places in Europe the other night together, which was really fun! Maybe one day we’ll get to check some of those places off together!
