FBFF: Summer Trends

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, which has for me always signaled the “official” beginning of summer, I’m going to talk about summer trends, per Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday.  In the past, I cared very little about summer trends.  When I was a kid (even a teenager) summer trends didn’t matter to me–or at least I don’t recall them mattering.  I spent the the vast most of my summers up along the shores of Lake Michigan, where daily wear was jean shorts, tank tops, and swimsuits… and when I wasn’t there, I was taking classes and working, neither of which had me caring about trends.

Once I graduated college, I didn’t care as much as I thought I would because I found that most summer clothing either wasn’t office appropriate, or was just not comfortable to wear in an air-conditioned office.  Between Summer and Fall, my daily wardrobe changes very little, because inside, it’s actually cold (especially compared to outside), and I hate being cold.

That said, there are some things I love wearing on weekends over the summer… or changing into after work.  There are a few things I always look forward to digging out of my closet, despite the fact that I can’t wear them to work.  Strappy sandals, short dresses, cute hats, bathing suits… and more recently, shorts!  Here are some of my favorite things for this summer.

I think what I especially love about summer shoes is the variety available.  From flats to sky high wedges and everything in between, there’s something for everyone (or everywhere)!  Check out this selection of summer-friendly shoes, suitable for the beach and beyond (mostly beyond, because I can’t get enough high heels and wedges), all for under $35!  Click the links below to view each pair.

From L to R: City Classified Cesar-S Fringe Thong Flat Sandal, $20.20; Christian-4 Strappy Leatherette Cork Platform Sandal, $31.40; Suede Strappy Heel, $30; Gladiator Wedge Sandals, $24.80; Darri-1 Open Toe Platform Wedge, $24.80; Crisscross Platform Sandals, $34.80; Buckle Tasseled Sandal, $16.70

While I’ve worn more dresses than usual this past winter and spring, summertime always seems to be the best time to bust out dresses.  Maybe it’s because you can go without tights and can wear cute strappy sandals with them?  I dunno, but here are dresses I love for summer 2012, ranging from beachy casual to fun night out… and they’re all under $35!  Click the links below to see each dress in its entirety.

I’ve only recently started wearing shorts again, and they’ve started to really grow on me–I used to hate wearing shorts.  Generally, I prefer my shorts cut a little more modest, with a 3″ to 5″ inseam, but I’ll make the occasional exception.  That seems to be the ideal cut on me, giving my legs a enough length without showing off too much cellulite tushie.  Here are some I’m eyeing for this summer, all under $25!  Click the links below to see them all.

Something I only recently started wearing a lot of during the summer, hats are great for when you’re going to be outside for long periods of time.  Not only can they be super fashionable or glamorous, but they can help protect your face from harmful UV rays.  Here are some hats I totally dig for summer, and with them all under $15, what’s not to love?

Favorite Summer Hats from Suburban Style Challenge

From L to R: Mossimo Supply Co. Black Shine Stripe Hat, $14.99; Bow Accent Floppy Hat, $10.80; Mossimo Supply Co. Tan Straw Cut-Out Fedora, $12.99; Fabric-Bow Cadet Hat, $9.50; Floppy Hat w/Flower, $12.80; Eyelet Band Straw Cloche, $10.80; Merona Intricate Blue Diamond Floppy Hat, $14.99

I buy a new bathing suit every season, even if I don’t need one.  I don’t know what it is about bathing suits, but they always seem to just call my name!  And with so many varieties out there, it seems like it’s getting easier to find something that not only fits, but looks great.  I’ve been leaning towards increasing the number of one-piece suits I have, since I have a ton of bikinis, though there have been a couple of two-piece suits that have caught my eye.  Being able to find a great suit for under $30 is pretty awesome… here are my favs.

Favorite Swimwear from Suburban Style Challenge

From L to R: Women’s Halter Monokini, $29.94; Women’s Mix & Match Bikini Bottoms & Halter Top, Total $29.88; Juniors Vintage 1-Piece Swimsuit, $29.99; Juniors Hipster Swim Bottom & Crop Sport Bra Swim Top, Total $29.98; Miss Tina Women’s Shirred Halter One-Piece Swimsuit, $24; Juniors 1-Piece Racer Back Swimsuit, $24.99; Juniors Stripe Keyhole Monokini, $24.99

I’m also digging tie front tops, cropped lacy tops, anything sheer, and accessories that scream “music festival”.  Braids and beachy waves have become my new favorite hairstyles, and I can never get enough big sunglasses (summer or any other time)!
